Alfred Hayes reviews

The most recent additions to the complete review are my reviews of two Alfred Hayes novels from the 1950s:        With novels of his re-issued in the past couple of years by Peter Owen (In Love), Europa editions (The Girl on the Via Flaminia), and New York Review Books (the two under review here) -- imprints whose taste you can have some faith in -- , it's good to see a bit of a Hayes-revival. If somewhat gloomy -- those black-and-white photographs by Saul Leiter, with their out-of-focus touch, which NYRB uses as cover-illustrations capture the prevailing mood -- they are still damn good reads.
