McEwan has just sold his manuscripts to the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, Texas. "Bundling up my papers," he says, "has been another ageing thing." The library, conventionally a sanctuary, has become a sobering transit-lounge. At once dry and droll, he describes it as "the antechamber to death".(I wonder whether they'll use that as a new logo in Austin .....)
