Mizumura Minae discusses this in her recent (and interesting) The Fall of Language in the Age of English, which is what led me to pick it up again (I had read Rubin's original translation many, many years ago), and it's definitely a work deserving more attention. And the Penguin Classics edition comes with an Introduction by Murakami Haruki .....
